Walking the Fryer Creek Trail
The City of Sonoma, California has a nice network of paved trails throughout town, with plans for more, as detailed on their Sonoma Bicycle Map.
Many of these trails are paved and accessible, including most of the trail that I walked earlier this month.
The Fryer Creek trail is lesser known than the Sonoma City Trail, and seems to be used mostly by folks in the neighborhood for their daily runs and walks. I did not encounter any cyclists, though the path would be perfect for them, as well.
In all, the path was shaded and lovely with thick foliage along both sides. It is about a mile long, though you can loop through and around to make your trek longer if you like. There are a couple of bridges to bring you across the creek and back. The trail is not a full loop, so you do end up doubling back on one portion.
The paved portion of the path runs mostly between MacArthur and Leveroni. Toward the end of the video, you will see an unpaved portion that runs between Third and Second Street West, north of MacArthur. It’s lovely now, if slightly overgrown and, in some places uneven. If you’re not steady on your feet, you may choose to skip that last section. There, the creek is full of lovely cattails, and I imagine would be even more beautiful at a less dry time of year.
Next time I walk the path, I may aim for the Spring when the creek might be running.
I’m sure the people who live in this area are quite pleased with their little walking path. I found it to be a nice break away from the sounds of traffic right in the middle of town.
